Austin Adventures - Kids and Coffee

Coffee and kids are not something that you typically put together, unless you are one of those crazy stage moms on Toddlers and Tiaras trying to pump your kid up before show time. Several coffee shops here in Austin are onto something combining the two. The coffee is for the parents and there is something fun like a band, puppets or a dog on a unicycle for the kids. Only in Austin, but that is why I love it so much here.

The first Saturday of the month you can head over to Flipnotics Coffee on Barton Springs to catch The Hey Lollies. A lovely little band that got Tallulah up and dancing. Not only do they sing fun interactive songs they have marionettes and unusual instruments like an upright bass. Round up the fam and head down one Saturday. Mommy and Daddy can enjoy coffee (we had Mexican Cokes) and a pastry while the little ones dance off some energy.

Can't wait for the first Saturday? Every Sunday you can head down South to Ruta Maya for some kid oriented fun. There is a rotating list of bands and performers every week to make your kiddlets laugh, sing and dance. Even if the onstage entertainment does not hold their attention there is an area in the coffee shop with toys and a beautiful water feature and sculptures to explore outside.

I've never been, mainly because it is across town from my house, but I hear The Cherrywood Coffee House has kids shows from time to time on the weekends. Check their events calendar for more information.

Did I mention that besides paying for what you eat and drink these events are free?
