Let’s kick off 2010 the right way, with free books. I have a few that have been accumulating around these parts that I need to review and give away. We are all feeling too broke to buy ourselves anything in January so I thought a little something free might be nice. So every Monday tune in for a quickie book review and a give away.
First up on the review and give away agenda is Chain Style: 50 Contemporary Jewelry Designs by Jane Dickerson. I don’t work with a lot of metal chain in my designs, but if the mood ever hit me this would be my bible. Right off the bat I was impressed with the extensive chain identification guide in the beginning of the book. Anyone who has picked up a fashion magazine or been to the mall lately knows that chain jewelry is all the rage. Chain Style has 50 different style options for you to choose from as well as several different contributing designers. What that means is that this book has something for everyone.
Jane Dickerson is the editor of Creative jewelry and Step by Step Beads Magazines so to put it bluntly – you know this book does not suck. Chain Style is chocked with tips and tricks about stretching your beading materials by incorporating in chain, what tools and supplies you will need and basic jewelry techniques like opening and closing jump rings and cutting chain.

ReplyDeleteThis is my kind of style for sure! I love single chain, multiple chain...unique charms anything that makes an impact! I think the jewelry you wear no matter the style says a lot about your personality for sure! I am starting out making my own and there was no doubt that this was my style!

ReplyDeleteI totally am in love with the chain style...multiple chains of different materials and sizes mixed with large beads, rings, found objects. It's a medium on my to do list to experiment this year.
ReplyDeleteI do love working with chain, and I especially love the Dirty Librarian Chains and Subversive Jewelry, because they are (clearly) very carefully crafted pieces that look like they just happened by accident! Maybe this book will show me how to create some accidents of my own... :-)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE chains. Especially now where they come in so many different colors than your standard metal ones. & you can always (if you know how and all) add or take away things if you're not happy with them once you've worn them for a bit.

I would love to win the book. I love chains, but were I come from (Israel) the literature on the subject is rare.

I love working with chain. I primarily wire-wrap and find that chain can add needed simplicity, elegance or drama. Now I'm looking forward to the opportunity to make the chain itself the focus!

ReplyDeleteBeing a child of the 80's, I had my own plastic chain charm necklace, complete with pink plastic telephone and yellow whistle. SO of course I love chains! (even if the adult version happens to be made of metal!) That book look sooo cool, I'd LOVE to have it!
