Trendy is as Trendy Does: Kiddos and Kimonos

I have always had a thing for Kimonos and as of late for kiddos. Put the two together and I’m downright nuts about it! I noticed that combining my two passions was actually easier than I thought.

I know you guys are probably sick to death of seeing the vintage Kimono that once acted as a curtain in my guest room (Out of the Closet Home Decorating and A Baby Nursery -Naughty Secretary Club Style) but I have one more use for it!

After the spare bedroom became a nursery the kimono was banished to the closet where it was much too pretty to live. Inspiration hit when I discovered Raspberry Baby took custom baby sling orders. I shipped my kimono off and it returned as a new snuggly porta-home for Tallulah.

It is a double kimono whammy! Tallulah and I are standing next to fellow Austin Craft Mafia member Jen Arntson in her vintage maternity kimono. Can you say jealous! Below another picture of the sling in action, I swear she usually loves it.

Next up is a little item I have had on my Wist since I was about 6 weeks pregnant. Problem was I didn’t know if I was having a boy or a girl until the moment Tallulah popped out so I waited to score and now long sleeves are too hot and the short set is too big, but they are both worth the wait. I bring you the kimono cuteness of Lucky Wang!

If the mood hit me to make my own baby kimono all I would have to do is pick up a copy of Amy Butler’s Little Stitches for Little Ones.

If I was actually going to sew one of those kimonos I wish I had some of the fabric in Japanese Childrens Fabrics 1950s to 1970s by Anita Yasuda. It is chocked full of kwaii fabrics used for kimonos. Just look at all the fawn choices. I’m thinking something with polka dots, bows and berets.

Chronicle Books recently sent me a set of the cutest coloring books I have ever set eyes on. The 3 coloring books called Rosie Flo’s Coloring Book, Rosie Flo's Animals Coloring Book and Rosie Flo's Garden Coloring Book are all illustrated by Roz Streeten. Each coloring book contains pictures of dresses for young ones to color and also spaces for them to add in their own hand drawn faces, arms and legs. That way each adorable dress whether it is shaped like an artichoke (Garden Coloring Book) or is a dress made of fabric covered in candy (Coloring Book) can be customized by the little one doing all the coloring. I was particularly smitten on the 2 page spread of Asian inspired frocks, including a kimono in Rosie Flo’s Garden Coloring Book. As my friend Jenny pointed out with the help of a Sublime Stitching Carbon Transfer Paper Kit these would also be adorable embroidered onto things!

If you know of any more Kimono cuteness please oh please let me know.

  2. Thanks Sommer, maybe I will. I just got 7"s cut off, but it's still long. I used to have this awesome book about how to do 40's hair, but can't find it for the life of me. Dang it was good too.

  9. Oh poops! I wish I'd had a maternity kimono last year. Well, maybe next time. (Oh...did I just say "next time"?)

Your little girl is beautiful. She and Ian should hook up some time once they get past the pooping-in-pants phase.
