Operation Craft Space Clean Up: Volume 3

Wow is it already the 3rd installment of Operation Craft Space Clean Up? (check out post #1 and #2) I feel like I am making great progress, but at the same time I am feeling a little bit of anxiety that I might not get the job done in a month. Surely I can wrap this sucker up in 20 days. I have decided I'm going to do a full video tour when the studio is spotless!

This week my goal was to get my desk cleaned off and not only did I meet my goal, I also got my work table cleaned. Let's start with the before pictures.

And after several days of sorting and throwing out things like a 2008 desk calendar I finally have a clean desk!

I am finding that a big part of this cleaning process is also rearranging and making better use of my space. One thing I did this week that I was patting myself on the back for was moving my press. I had all the magazines and newspapers Naughty Secretary Club had been featured in stored on a book shelf in my studio. On the flip of that I had empty cabinets high above my desk. I moved the magazines and newspapers up high since I don't need to access them often and freed up the bookshelf for items I need to have more readily available.

As an added bonus I got my work table cleaned off. On the downside one of the legs broke off the table so it's not like I can work on it anymore. I'm taking suggestions for creative worktable solutions. I might end up knocking off my mom's idea and using some plywood and readymade cabinets on wheels to create an all new table. What do you use?

Ok work table before pictures. It's no wonder the table broke under the weight of all that junk.

The after picture would be a lot more meaningful if the table was actually functional. Oh well, how long did I really expect a hollow door on Ikea legs to last?

Ya know I never thought I would say this, but I'm starting to wish my studio had more color. When Naughty Secretary Club Headquarters was still in the master bedroom the walls were bubblegum pink, the peg board was electric yellow and there was bright vintage Barkcloth curtains. My new studio has white walls and a white floor. I think I might need to paint at least one wall before this is all said and done.

Progress wise I still need to conquer another work table and my sewing table. There is an old TV that I have been saving for a craft project that needs to be moved in order to free up valuable wall space for another shelf or some sort of storage option. The part really keeping me up at night is the floor. There are so many little things all over the floor. I am trying to avoid falling into the trap of just scooping things up and putting random piles of junk in bins. Instead I am really trying to put every little thing away in the right place and if there is no right place make one. This is a long and tedious task and no one said it was going to be easy. I'll be back next Tuesday with another update and hopefully at least a little more clean floor space. In the meantime I really appreciate all your words of support and ideas for storage and cleaning. Keep em coming because they are keeping me going.

You are doing an awesome job! Keep it up. My mom is in the process of organizing her home. It does help to not just jumble things in piles "until I find the right place", you need to put the things in the right place right away. I am getting inspired by you, I may tackle my craft room!

  3. It's looking great! :)

    I love before/after pics!!! hahaha

I thought you were cleaning/organizing for the very reason of painting & new floors. Did you paint something? Or new floors some where??

Can't wait to see the video when it's all done.

  7. Wow! You got a lot done already. I would like to paint in my craft areas, too. Too much stuff to move to paint, though. So, I guess I let the stuff be the color.

    Great inspiration!

  8. You are inspiring me to organize too! I can't believe how much you get done in a week! I also need a new work table idea, and was contemplating some kind of cabinet with a board across it - I need something waist high.
And I hafta say, that compared to your house, your work space it way too white! I agree with painting - I mean you're already this far right, so why not do it all while you're at it?

  9. I just recently found this woodworking blog that has lots of plans for building your own table and other furniture. Most of it isn't my style, as is but wouldn't be hard to jazz up with some paint and fits my budget! http://knockoffwood.blogspot.com/

Good work on the clean up so far!

  12. Okay, I'm sticking with my plan to clean my space too. Now that I see another person in the same shoes, it doesn't all seem to overwhelming. I've been working in my creative space off and on since the 1st of the month and haven't made a lot of progress, but I'm feeling energetic and inspired now. Thank you for sharing with us and congratulations of the USA interview.

    Blessings,
    Angela

  13. I use a solid wooden door on two wooden saw horses. I've had two studio/work tables like that. One I covered in some groovy fabric an Aunt gave Me, and the other I didn't because of the work I do on it. Either which way, the bonus is that I string all my chords/wires through the door~knob opening!

  14. i tackled my studio/office last winter, and i still sit here wondering if i like the way it is :) i found once it was clean i didnt want to actually mess it up, so a certain amount of clutter seems to work for me. turns out i need to see my stuff to feel inspired sometimes. i try and remember to continually clean as i go so i dont ever get overwhelmed again!

i just wanted to say keep going! you are giving me tonnes of ideas for new ways to store things and motivation to tackle some corners of clutter i have been avoiding :)

  15. You are doing a wonderful job! I like your Mom's idea for a table. I might try that when I finally get a craft room/studio myself. Meanwhile - sometimes it is good to eyeball the things on the floor - pick out what is good and simply sweep away the rest (into the trash). I've done that while cleaning out a child's room more than once. Keep going - you are almost there!

  16. WOW Jennifer you are really rockin' on cleaning up your studio, kudos to you lady!!!

I am in a similar situation. I originally had my creative space in the front room of our house, my *stuff* kept multiplying and I needed more room to create. We have a loft that the kids were using as a playroom, really it was more like a room to throw everything in so no playing was being done nor was any cleaning. Needless to say, I took over the loft for my play room/ studio. It has been months of de-cluttering, unpacking and organizing ALL of my *junque*. I, like you, love thrifting and have a lot of older stuff that I have such wonderful ideas to *make*, but it takes me awhile to get around to actually making them...UGH!!! I'm also a recycling, repurposing nut, so old toys that have broken have a chance at a new life...in short, I keep almost everything for it's hidden potential. Somedays I feel like a hoarder of ribbons, fabric remnants, paper and stickers (among other things).

I am inspired by you to finish my studio space and video the results. I don't have a baby, but I have 3 older kids (5,8, &10) and health limitations, so It is a loooong process for me.

I feel more committed than ever and I'm really comforted by knowing I am not the only hopeless, unorganized, really messy artist out there (which I ALREADY knew), you were just BRAVE enough to share it with us!!! Thank you for that. I'll be watching your progress and working on mine...stayed tuned for my final reveal (fingers crossed and butterflies in my tummy)...WE CAN DO THIS!!!

I looked back on my blog at when I moved my studio and it was a year ago December...geez I'm bad, it has taken me over a year!!! here's the link if you wanna see my old space and better intentions...

  19. As can be seen you need to build a lot of storage and a nice desk with storage for the most important things at hand. While the suitcases could be kept in the storage on the wall...the more important material has to kept near the work area.
