Trendy is as Trendy Does: Fabric Jewelry

Lately I have a thing for fabric jewelry. I’m not sure why with temperatures in Austin in the 90’s since early March, they sound a little warm. However, hot or not I can’t help but remain smitten on soft jewelry of all shapes and sizes. So much so that I find myself perusing through Etsy looking for the latest additions and dreaming about how I can work with fabric more in my own jewelry line. If you recall I did have almost 10 projects in The Naughty Secretary Club: The Working Girls Guide to Handmade Jewelry that included fabric ranging from neckties to craft felt and T-shirts to hankies. I also often have jewelry on Naughty Secretary Club that include fabric. I get jealous of the seamstresses and want to have my own fabric fun.

So you too can enjoy my addiction to fabric jewelry I rounded up a few of my favorite designs. You can see I’m not picky felted, twisted, torn or crocheted all jewelry with fabric is fair game to catch my eye. Tomorrow you can tune in to I Love to Create and see how to make your own fabric necklace!

One of my very favorite jewelry designers is one I know very little about. Flora Bond has a website, Etsy shop, Twitter feed and blog but for the life of me I could not figure out the designers name or location. Let’s just say whoever and wherever you are Flora Bond your necklaces are amazing and I heart them immensely.

All the way from Lithuania I bring you the felted jewelry of Tijusai. I may bust out my needle felting kit and roving yet!

It’s not that the fabric wrapped bangle is a particularly novel idea, but somehow Poppy Raye Studio does it so well. Perhaps it is the choice of fabric and the frayed edges that caught my eye.

A knitted necklace in Texas is a no-no on the warmth-o-meter, but how could someone say no to this amazing design from Into Knitted Textile Design. I love that either side of the knitted necklace is different. Also I understand the sherbet colored knit beads, but the brown pouches are a bit perplexing. Lord knows I love perplexing when it comes to jewelry. No really I do.

Giia’s bio sounds as good on paper as it looks: Architect-Product Designer based in Milano, Italy. That statement alone makes it seem extra fancy. I love the organic wave like shapes of the fabric. The blue collar might be my favorite with the chunky silver fabric chain necklace coming in a close second.

When recently researching doily trends I happened upon Auckland, New Zealand’s Senga Arts and was immediately smitten. Debra Dorgan makes the most wondermous wearable crochet collages. There is a controlled chaos about each one of a kind colorful piece that draws me in.

I discovered Krista Raak in the Autumn 2008 issue of Belle Armoire Jewelry. Her necklaces look so intricate with all the beadwork, tatting, painting and oh la la vintage fabric scraps. Fussy beadwork is typically a big turnoff for me, but somehow Krista makes me love seed beads.

Makes you want to bust out the needle and thread does it not? You may never look at your fabric stash the same way. Let’s just say I have a vintage fabric stash to rival most seamstresses and my sewing machine has not been turned on all year. Fabric is for a lot more than just sewing if you look at it through jewelry colored glasses. Know any other fabulous fabric jewelry designers I forgot? Are you feeling about this trend?

  1. I'm not sure that Yokoo would count since it is knitted - but I'm in love with it either way:

I also love this trend - and the possibilities are endless - I mean there's such great fabric out there. So many amazing prints and textures. I'd like to see more made with upholstery fabric... just a thought.

  4. Bonnie I see Yokoo on the front page of Etsy a lot. I do like her things. I also wonder if I like it more because her product shots are so styled and interesting. Like they are from a magazine.

The possabilties are endless. I even teach a class on fabric jewelry and am pitching a book on the subject.

  13. jen-i am not sure if yout get to these regularly but how do you do the flowers (like the ones in the necklace by flora bond?). I have 3 girls, so they are waaaay out of my budget, but they would even be cute as hair clips, etc!

Please email me (karaintx@yahoo.com) if you know of a web tutorial!
    THANKS!!!

I am so in love with fabric jewelry! I love the selection you included in your blog. You asked if you left out any fabric jewelry artists...although I may not be on the cover of the magazine, I do love fabric pieces. Check out my "edgy couture" collection or my "sweater treasures" both made with fabrics and yarn and beads, chain, and metal. You can see these designs on my facebook business page under TimeLine Treasures: Designer Jen Geroski! Thanks for sharing these!
