Its time for a roundup of some things I have spied happening around the internet recently. A contest here a raffle there plus some interesting things to read. I thought I would sprinkle this post with pictures of the 25 new hair clips I added to Naughty Secretary Club over the weekend. And you thought all I did was frolic with the new puppy all the day long.
First up I received an update from Faythe at Handmade Nation about the progress of the film and the accompanying book. I’m so excited to be included in both I can hardly wait for them to come out! To help support their efforts the ladies have an Etsy store as well as a monthly raffle so it would be more than awesome if you checked out both!
The March Raffle includes:
I Heart Felt book, Handmade Nation T-Shirt (you pick size), Handmade Nation Pocket Mirror, 3 Sublime Stitching iron-on transfers, one skein Handspun Yarn from yarnpunk!!
Tickets cost $2, one winner will be selected at random from entries. Enter as many times as you want, winners will be announced the last week of March and the package will ship thereafter. All proceeds will go towards production cost for film.
Also the film is in the editing stages and expected for a 2009 release and Handmade Nation the book is in the design edit phase. In April look for Faythe in Pittsburgh participating in the "Women in the Arts" symposium. Also keep your ears open for news about a silent art auction in Los Angeles in conjunction with Poketo this summer.......
Wow that is a lot of Handmade Nation gossip that gets me super excited. The ladies have come down to Austin for Stitch twice now so we can't wait to see the film and read the book!
Speaking of Poketo this reminds me of Ponoko. Tammy Powley from my lovely Bead Blogging gang mentioned it the other day on our yahoo boards and I went to their website. All someone needs to say is jewelry design contest and I am somewhat interested. I gather the site is like Etsy in a sense, but not only do they help you sell things they help you make it as well. From what I can tell this is a website where you design your image and they will cut it out for you of acrylic or wood: name plates, guns, deers and more have been making the scene for awhile now. I’m curious if anyone has used this site and what the prices and finished products are like.
While we are on the topic of contests Rachel over at Average Jane Crafter wrote to let me know that Diane at Crafty Pod is having herself a little jewelry related contest. Enter to win yourself a free copy of Bead Style Magazine. You can never have too many periodicals or inspiration lying around your house is my motto. Diane also mentions the Bead and Button show that I have always toyed with the idea of attending. Has anyone ever been? I actually don’t use beads very often, but if they are plastic and vintage I would make an exception.
Last but not least via the Richmond Craft Mafia I got let onto a new magazine that sounds interesting called DIY City Mag. The first issue is all about NYC and all that is Indie and DIY there. They have an online community where you can plug your city and maybe a future issue will be all about your hometown. I’m gonna stop by and put in a good word for Austin.

Yesterday I took a brief intermission from working to hit a few thrift stores with my sister Hope. As we were checking out at Thrift Land I noticed a plastic bucket on the counter full of vintage hankies! I scored myself 27. Hankies have such possibilities in the crafty world. I use them in my book to make jewelry, my mom has sewn them into purses and pin cushions, I have seen them make adorable curtains. I also love to use vintage hankies for color inspiration in my jewelry. The color combinations are so unusual and make me want to bust the beads out.
I also wanted to post these pictures to show you why blogging has become difficult for me recently. I have a little helper who really likes to get involved in everything, including hankie photo shoots.

I always find the Oscars rather boring. For one I don’t often go to the movies so the movies that are winning awards have not come through my Netflix cue making the Oscars not that exciting for me. Remember what happened when I tried to go and see No Country for Old Men? Need I say more. I did see Michael Clayton, but I think out of the biggies that is the only movie. Yup I have not even seen Juno, even though I had a friend recently say “the girl in Juno reminds me of you minus the teen pregnancy thing”. I watch the Oscar red carpet part to see what people are wearing, but even that bores me to tears year after year. The only thing I saw that caught my eye at all was Cate Blanchett’s necklace and earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Anne Hathaway’s Marchesa goddess gown, though not at all my style, had interesting draping. I usually love all things leopard skin and even Diablo Coty’s dress did nothing for me. That being said Chris and I instead of watching the Oscars loaded up the dogs and went to Culvers for Milk Shakes and came home to watch Rock of Love.
SPOILERS COMING I have to say I was kind of glad that Bret was making out with Christy Joe in this episode because earlier in the evening as Chris and I were making our sloppy Joes (can I sound anymore white trash in this post between sloppy joes, rock of love and Culvers) anyway because I was pontificating that Bret clearly already has a thing for Daisy so the rest of the season is kind of pointless to watch. I felt bad for Peyton and Katherine, but we all knew they were going to leave sooner than later. Speaking of outfits man the elimination outfits on Rock of Love are so tackaliscious it kills me. I miss Heather and her stripper gear, but some of the other outfits are just as bad. Last night when Katherine left I noticed she had on a little sundress with black sheer hose and open toed white shoes. I screamed out loud and woke the puppy up. I think Christie Joe and Daisy are going to be our new Heather and Jess which of course means a season 3 thank God. Bret needs to go to Bravo and meet the bitchy Millionaire Matchmaker lady so she can lecture him on picking women more his age and wearing less eyeliner and then maybe someone would long term rock his world. Now I have to wait anixously for my friend Jen to write her snarky summary of this week's episode so I can prolong my Rock of Love afterglow for the week.
The rest of our week and weekend consisted of Alice in Wonderland themed dinner parties, trips out to the country for puppy play dates, petting a donkey named Samuel, adding new goodies to Naughty Secretary Club, watching Year of the Dog which is an awesome yet super sad movie that made me almost cry 12 times, adding new stuff to my Etsy store, going over to my friend Erin’s in my jammies to watch a movie and more!
I promise to try and be a better blogger this week but I am here to tell you when you are having to follow a 10 week old puppy around constantly to make sure they don't pee on your carpet not to mention wake up every day at 5ish with them it kind of sucks the life right out of you.

Today my friends is Presidents Day, so like any good red blooded American I am having a sale to celebrate. All our presidential jewelry at Naughty Secretary Club is 15% off for today only. Just enter the word President in the voucher field when you check out.
This includes our brand spanking new JFK earrings Ask Not, our recently restocked Abe Was a Babe Necklace and matching Honest Abe Bracelet, not to mention the Big Bucks Baller Necklace, Land of Lincoln pin and The Peanuts Pearly Whites Necklace. Has there ever been a better day to stock up on jewelry depicting your favorite founding father?
This being an election year and all (I just know you are all registered to vote) I thought I would do a pictorial guide of other presidential goodies we have had on Naughty Secretary Club through the years...
Ya - ya I know MLK was not a president, but we all know he should have been.
Let's not forget the Naughty Secretary Club / Hot Pink Pistol collaboration for Stitch 2007 - presidents in glitter.
So happy presidents day from Naughty Secretary Club!

Today my sister Hope and I made the thrift store rounds in Austin. I thought today was going to be like any other day at the thrift stores, little did I know I was going to meet Flossy. At Thrift Land our eyes met (her eyes bulge out quite a bit) from across the room and I knew she must be mine. When I got closer to her and realized she was from the 60's, had fur that looks like cotton candy and was $2.99 I put that bear on my hip like she was a toddler and carried her to the register. She is probably as big as a toddler too. I buckled her in and took her home and proudly placed her atop some shelving in my studio.
Here is Flossy getting rung up at the thrift store. I also bought a really cute scarf! Flossy asked me if she could borrow it sometime and I said sure.
Buckle up for safety. We made Hope ride in the backseat so Flossy and I could chat and get to know each other a little better. Poor thing went through a lot at the thrift store like being held by little kids with crusty food all over their faces and dirty diapers.
When Flossy and I got home she was happy to see Mr. Giant Panda head also living in my studio and felt right at home.
Besides befriending Flossy I also did an insane amount of jewelry supply shopping. Given I have drawers and drawers of cabs, chain and charms, but there is always room for more. Sometimes getting new stock inspires me to use some random supply I have had for years. I should have boxes arriving for a week straight and I am so excited I can hardly stand it!

Last week I was perusing through the Naughty Secretary Club selection of earrings and I thought to myself, I’m not sure I would wear a lot of these options. Not because they are bad or ugly, they were just not my taste. I made them and I like them a lot, I just would not wear them. Remember I like my earrings jumbo sized and obnoxious. I have just been ignoring the earring side of things like a bad girl since I have been making Revamped Vintage Necklaces for Naughty Secretary Club and Etsy like crazy. That being said I sat down over a couple of days and designed 25+ new pairs of earrings. Some options are not even on the website yet. Sword Fight in the Tiki Bar, Linear, Daisy Doily – now these are earrings I would wear! Some of the earrings I can make 50 of and others I only have enough supplies to make 2 or 3. I am peppering this week’s edition of Bead Bloggers with some pretty pictures of the new bling….
