Craft Lab Season 2 Starts Monday!

Guess what tomorrow is? Not only the first day of October, but also the start of Craft Lab Season 2 on DIY Network! Whoo-Hoo hooray! Lemme give you a rundown of what episodes are on this week...

MONDAY: Looks like we are having a Crafty Chica day because Kathy will be my guest on Craft Lab at 11:30am for Day of the Dead and again at 12pm for All That Glitters. All that Glitters is the new episode and I love it because my husband Chris is one of the guest crafters!

TUESDAY: My good friend Traci Bautista stops by Craft Lab land to make Crayon Cupcakes with me.

WEDNESDAY: There are so many things I love about this episode. The guests company is called Brew Holster Cult and she is in an all girl ACDC cover band called ACDShe. Check out Leather Brew and if you want a sneak peak watch the clip below.

THURSDAY: It appears that this is another double whammy Craft Lab today with two episodes. My guest is plushie rock star Jenny Harada at 11:30 making a Furry Monster Mask. At 12pm Matt Maranian, the author of my favorite book in the whole wide world (Pad: The Guide to Ultra Living) is my guest with the Retro Home episode. If you have seen my house you know how much I loved this episode.

FRIDAY: I was so excited that we had a jewelry making episode on Craft Lab I could have squealed! Check out the Beaded Jewelry episode with Maya Brenner.

Also don't forget they are still showing Craft Lab on HGTV Monday mornings. OMG I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING WEIRD. On Craft Lab DIY tomorrow my husband is going to be on the episode and on Craft Lab HGTV tomorrow my mother Fredda Perkins is the guest with her episode about Making reproduction glass 40's frames!

Stylelicious is still on every Tuesday and Thursday on the DIY Network at 1:30pm. This week catch the episodes Vintage Revamp and Ties. Another family member on TV. My younger sister Hope Perkins will be showing you how to hand paint a tie!

Garage Studio Conversion Part 2

I hate feeling trapped in my own house. Today they are brining in the insulation for the garage so I am having to stowaway with Lucy and Georgie in my office. Not that I wouldn’t be back here working anyway, but I wouldn’t have the door closed and my pets trapped with me. The guys keep leaving the door open so I don’t trust the kids not to make a break for the great outdoors so they are trapped under my watchful eye. I’ll be so happy when they are all done with the garage. When you work from home it is very disconcerting to have strangers in and out of your house all day making loud hammering noises. Every time I hear someone in the bathroom I have mini panic attacks thinking things like “Did I picked my underwear up off the floor when I took a bath?” Not that I think the workman are in my bathroom with my underwear on their head and my toothbrush God knows where, but ya know strangers in the house is just weird. I think we are making some headway on things and maybe by the first week in October things should be done. Sheetrock should be coming today or tomorrow and Lowe’s called to tell me my new flooring was in. I’m just ready to put things back in the attic and have a normal house again. Speaking of the attic Chris heard something scratching around up there last night. I hope whatever rodent it is gets discouraged about their new home when the insulation goes in today. It was double weird because we watched that movie Willard Sunday night. I am hoping it was Socrates up in the attic and not Ben. Anyway, not too much longer… I can be brave. It’s only complicating my life a little bit before it makes my life awesome in my new studio!

Bird Themed Weddings!

Karly’s wedding went off without a hitch. Everything looked amazing and in perfect bird theme, the food was yummy, the dancing was awesome and a good time was had by all. This is a picture of Jesse and I from the evening. Not the best picture of me in the world, but for those of you who are keeping score this is the other Lilly Allen dress I had shipped over from London. I wore the first one to Vickie’s wedding (and Friday night to the Tribeza fashion show for that matter) and the other one Saturday to Karly’s wedding. I wish I had a picture of my shoes to show you, I’m too lazy to go snap a quick picture. They were these Irregular Choice heels that I have had for 2 years and never had on my feet. I took them out and realized they matched the dress perfectly! They were green with a purple polka dotted bow over the toe and most importantly they have spurs. Yes spurs that clink when I walk and spin. I somehow amazingly danced the night away in them. My other favorite part of the wedding was the fun wooden picture cut out they had (Cory and Reynard are in the picture). Karly had a picture of her grandparents on their wedding day at a carnival or fair with their heads peaking through a wooden cutout of a married couple so Karly commissioned Hope to paint an updated version for everyone to take a picture in at the wedding. There was a Polaroid near by where you taped your picture in the wedding book and wrote a special note. Super duper cute!

Bead Bloggers and Fashion Shows

I was a bad girl and missed last weeks eddition of Bead Bloggers. Actually I wasn't bad, I was just stowed away at a Bed and Breakfast in Maine without the internet so I didn't get to post. Today I'm going to post the links from last week and this along with some pictures of the new jewelry I added to Naughty Secretary Club today! Let's start with September 10th...

Art Bead Scene
Worlds and beads are colliding at the Art Bead Scene! This post is just a friendly reminder that the month and your chance to win free beads from Joan Miller and Humblebeads are almost up!

Bead Arts
Cyndi shows you how to cinch a stone, simply and beautifully.

Jewelry and Beading
Tammy touts the treasures you can gather from other beaders when you join a bead society.

Katie's Beading Blog
This week, Katie shares tips on writing a newsletter to promote your business.

Snap out of it, Jean! There's beading to be done!
In a discussion of why we should plan out our designs, Jean shows a pretty fall bracelet set with a cool clasp and some findings which suit the beads perfectly!

The Impatient Blogger
Clay play anyone? Margot shows some recent experiments in polymer clay and talks about her creative process. After you check out the beginning stages, see the resulting finished necklace!

And the Bead Blogging links from Sept 17th....

Art Bead Scene
Need to find some beading friends to share your creativity with? Someone who understands the depth of your beady insanity? In a helpful post last month, Heather gave us six great reasons to join a bead society, along with a resource to find one near you.

Bead Arts
Cyndi suggests that if you want to dust off your skills with wood, you think about ordering the new book by Lark publications, due out soon, called "The Art of Jewelry: Wood"

Jewelry and Beading
Japanese if you please! Tammy is playing again with metal clay and points her readers to this way cool Japanese web site.

Katie's Beading Blog
In Katie's ongoing quest to find new uses for findings, she reveals chandelier earrings and a necklace that use beading cones as an integral part of the design.

Savvy Crafter
Ahoy, Bead-lovers! Even pirates would be envious of Candie’s loot after her beach-side bead shopping spree along the South China Sea.

Snap out of it Jean! There's beading to be done!
Jean's traumatic experience with her first spiral seed bead bracelet. Argh!

The Impatient Blogger
See Margot sign books at a new AC Moore store opening. Then enjoy another entry in her Adventures in Jewelry Making with the BQOTU (Day) entries. In this episode, Margot shares how to properly open and close a jump ring. It may not be rocket science, but jewelry making does use physics, who knew?

In other exciting news Tina Sparkles and I went to the Tribeza Magazine fashion show last night at the Blanton Art Museum. My friend Lauren who works there put us on the list and Tina and I were just feeling lucky to go. When we got there Lauren had surprised me with the VIP royal treatment. We got to be whisked behind velvet curtains for free cocktails and had actual second row seats for the fashion show. Highlights include the music by DJ Dojo, the people watching, Goodie bags with free Brownie Butts, some dang hot male models and all the amazing ankle boots on the runway! Boutiques that participated included Envie, Estillo, The Garden Room, Keepers and more. Stores that I have never set foot in and had never considered shopping in until after the fashion show last night. Kudos to Tribeza for putting on an amazing show. The show made me feel panicky about Stitch, which I do every year at about this time.

Ok I'm off to pick my mom up at the airport. She is coming in for Karly's wedding tonight! Pictures tomorrow.

I Can't Get Through October Without...

Wowsers I’m in the October issue of Marie Claire and my secret love of Christopher Meloni has been revealed. I would like to clarify that I do not go to bed at 10pm as the article implies I actually watch the show on TBS at midnight. The rest is totally true. Oh and guess what? I snuck in a few new pairs of Revamped Vintage Earrings yesterday since people and writing me asking for the earrings in the magazine. That's my pair, sorry. Want to read the original list I sent over to Marie Claire when they asked me what I couldn’t live without…

Perez Hilton – A friend of mine managed to get me addicted to his blog. I was not a big celebrity gossip fan before this, and now I find myself checking it more than once a day! More scary is all my friends are starting to read it so when we see each other at parties or bars I find we are discussing what we read on Perez Hilton that week. What has the world come to?

Diet Coke – I just counted 9 empty cans on my desk as I typed. Some people say Diet Coke is addictive, I say they are right.

Threading – Instead of having my eye brows waxed I go to a little place in Austin called Tara’s Salon where they work magic on your eyebrows with what appears to be some twisted dental floss. I look like I have had a face lift when I leave.

My Mother – I’m a momma’s girl what can I say. I don’t make a crafty move without consulting her first.

Mexican Food – Growing up in Texas a taste for Tex Mex is the other thing you acquire besides the accent.

Blogging – Every morning I wake up and blog, it’s part of my routine now. Not sure much of anyone besides my husband and a handful of friends read it, but for some reason it helps me get my day started and keeps me in line.

MAC Studio Fix Foundation – When you have had your makeup professionally done every day for a TV show you get used to thick make up. It’s a hard habit to break much to the dismay of the sweet gal who does my facials.

Pajama Pants – I’m sure my husband wishes I would sleep in sexy short nightgowns, but I have to sleep in pajama pants. Preferably flannel. What if someone broke in or the house burned down? I want to be fully dressed and ready to jump out of bed.

Netflix – My husband and I love watching movies and are currently enrolled in the 3 movies at a time plan. We fight over arranging the queue so sometimes it is probably not the healthiest thing in our relationship.

Itunes – I am a huge music fan and my Itunes is constantly being played and added on to. Before I made jewelry and hosted craft shows I wrote music reviews for magazines and I co-owned a record label.

Blackberry – I used to be a Treo girl but after an unfortunate incident involving my Sim card escaping at a park in Brooklyn I have switched over to the dark side of the Crackberry. With running an online business having the ability to check my email at all times without toting around a lap top is super awesome. The Treo had Tetris and I do miss that.

Ear Plugs – I travel quite a bit and hotel rooms are not exactly tranquil, especially when you get stuck in a room next to the elevator or above unsupervised kids. Not to mention at home between my dog and my husband and they way they snore I can’t get a wink of sleep without them.

Law and Order SVU – Can not go to sleep without hearing the soothing words luminal whispered in my ear while watching some sort of forensics or crime TV show.

Computers – I have 2.5 if you count my Blackberry. I work on my home computer when my assistant is not here and during his shift I live on my Dell Inspiron 6000. I am from Austin after all, I have to use a Dell.

Big Earrings – whether they be Naughty Secretary Club brand or not, I keep a quite the stash of big earrings on hand at all times. Now that I mention it, all my jewelry is big. Ya know what they say about everything being bigger in Texas, I guess with me and jewelry it’s true.

Extra thick Rubber bands – I sometimes wonder why I bother having layers cut into my hair because from the moment I wake up until I lay my head on the pillow at night my hair is in some sort of ponytail/bun concoction. When the messy bun look came in vogue I was so happy.

Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Relax – To relax and shape the layers in my hair that no one sees I use a couple of pumps of my Kerastase every time I have a wet head.

Replenix Green Tea Serum – If green tea is so good for you to drink, it’s got to be good to slather on your face right? That was the logic that was bestowed on me by my dermatologist when I bought it so that is what I keep telling myself.

Back from Boston and Bethel

If you go to Boston you of course have to go to the Cheers Bar don’t you? Well at least Chris thought so. We didn’t actually go inside we just stood out front and fought the crowd for a moment of camera time underneath the famous sign. Chris and I flew back into Austin around 11 last night from our whirlwind trip and we are trying to get back into the groove of things today.

Last Friday we flew into Portland, Maine and drove a rental car to Bethel, Maine. We were attending my friend Leah’s wedding. Bethel was a quaint little town and we stayed at a super nice bed and breakfast called The Gideon Hastings House. Our bathtub was huge and Jacuzzi so that is all I gotta say! The wedding it’s self was across the street at The Bethel Inn. A good time was had by all, but since I only knew the bride it was a little socially awkward at times. Leah and I went to school for a semester in London in our early 20’s and that is where we met. Since then she has come to Texas twice and I have been to visit her in New York several times (She works for Lacoste and has worked for all kinds of awesome fashion houses). We also once drove from Chicago across to the Corn Palace and Mount Rushmore, over to Yellowstone, up to Seattle, down to San Francisco, up to Reno and Salt Lake City and then back to Madison Wisconsin. We were together with our other friend Amanda in a car for a month so we are pretty tight. The wedding was lovely and Bethel is a super cute town. We happened to be there during the fall harvest fest as well!

The Sunday after the wedding Chris and I drove our little rental car down to Salem, Massachusetts. We of course had to see all the witchy sites. We were meeting our friend from London Jeff in Boston, but he actually got a ride out to Salem to meet us. He is into all that Goth stuff so Salem was like his Mecca. From here we drove to Boston and returned the car and headed for our digs, the Hotel Buckminster. Little did we know we were a stones throw from Fenway Park and that same night there was a Yankees / Red Sox game. That added to the excitement a bit. We avoided the area and went over to Newberry street for some of best seafood I have ever had at the Atlantic Fish Company and drinks at Bukowski’s.

Monday we walked The Freedom Trail. This is actually a really nice walk through Boston that not only allows you to see all the historical sites but also the modern day city of Boston. We saw the sites like Old Ironsides and Bunker Hill and ate lunch at the Union Oyster House which is supposedly the oldest restaurant in Boston. It was a long walk on a lot of cobblestone and by the end mommy was pooped. That night we made a trek to a bar in South Boston called Delux which was a little disappointing (the Time Out Guide said it was a shrine to all things kitsch, but my standard is pretty high). We didn’t stay long because Jeff’s friend Eve and her girlfriend Vic rang us and wanted to meet in Cambridge. We got there a little early and popped into the B Side Lounge for a drink while we waited for the ladies. They came and whisked us away in Vic’s amazing 60’s Chrysler Newport and took us to this awesome restaurant called Cuchi Cuchi that they also lovingly referred to as Liberace’s. There were yummy tapas, the waitress wore wigs and dressed like flappers, mosaiced mermaids adorned the front of the building – it was kitschy heaven and I loved it. After dinner we headed to a bar called The People’s Republik and then home.

Jeff had to go to New York for the screening of his Beta Valentine Video on Tuesday morning so Chris and I kicked him to the curb and headed out for our day. I of course had to go shopping on Newberry street. Thom Brown shoes had come highly recommended but I have to say the sales girls were snotty when I tried on shoes and I promptly thought better of spending my money there. Well if they had had the knee high brown suede fringed moccasin boots in my size I would have gotten over it, but they didn’t. There was an H&M that made me quite happy since remember we don’t have those in Texas. I only walked out with a small bag which is unusual for me. We had lunch in the café portion of Sonsie and then made our way around some other Boston sites like The Cheers Bar, China Town and others. Tuesday was also Chris’s birthday and since he loves Italian food our mission was to have a nice dinner in the North End. We wanted to go to Bricco, but they were full so we went next door to Tresca. I was not impressed by the food here and since the hostess and another waitress who were right by our table were singing and being silly and our waiter kept going outside our window view of Hanover street to talk on his cell phone our romantic night out was a bit spoiled. After dinner we popped over to the Bell in Hand to watch some Karaoke and then across the street to The Green Dragon to watch a guy and his acoustic guitar.

Wednesday was the longest day ever. We had to be out of our hotel room at 11am so with all our suitcases we had nowhere to go but to the airport. We were so early for our flight that we could not even check in our luggage yet. We waited and waited and eventually at about 4 we started our journey home. There was a layover with dinner at Chili’s at O’Hare in Chicago and then home in Austin by 11.

I am so happy that I don’t have anymore trips planned for this year. Well there will be trips to Dallas to see my family, but that does not count. This year I have been to Vermont, California (San Francisco and Annehiem), Massachusetts (twice), Arizona, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vancouver, Maine and I am sure somewhere else I am forgetting. I am burnt out on traveling for a bit and it feels good to put my suitcase away and mean it this time.

I Heart My New Website!

Did you know that the new Naughty Secretary Club website has been in the works for almost 2 years? It’s true and now that it is here and live I feel like it was so worth the wait. I loved my old website oodles, but this new rainbowliscious version is so much more me. I prefer everything around me to emulate candy in some way, including my web site. The new site was designed by a lovely lady named Grace who has been designing my ads and postcards for years. She hit the nail on the head with the style. It is just the technical part that is giving me a hard time. I have spent the last few days playing with the new site and OS Commerce learning the ins and outs. I think I am getting the hang of things. The shopping cart is working like a dream so please feel free to shop your little heart out. I am leaving for Bethel, Maine and Boston tomorrow morning, but upon my return expect to see tons of new baubles hitting the website. Here is a little baby sneak peak!

Thank you to everyone for all the nice comments about the website. I love me some compliments, but if you find anything wrong or hate something about the new site I can take the criticism too. I’m using you guys as my testers to make sure there is no weirdness on the site that I or my programmer and designer are overlooking.

Naughty Secretary Club 4.0

If you have looked at Naughty Secretary Club lately you might have noticed a few things. First being that I have not updated and added any new goodies in forever and ever. The main reason is because I have been having a new website built and I wanted all the products to match up. If you have checked out the new site in the last 24 hours you might have noticed the new site is there!!!! This makes the new website the 4th version of Naughty Secretary Club. Go check it out and tell me what you think. First off I can tell you that the shopping cart is not working perfectly and we are working out some kinks so I would hold off on any order placing. If you notice any blaring mistakes or weirdness on the site please feel free to leave me a comment or email me about it. I would love words of wisdom. The new shopping cart is a software called OS Commerce which I have absolutely no experiencce with. Once I figure it all out the new site will have lots of awesome perks like most importantly I won’t ever over sell anything again. The new site will keep track of how many of each item I have. In the meantime I am trying to learn all about the software and how to manage my new site. I come from a world of Dreamweaver, Authorize and Mals E so this is all a bit Greek to me. So in other words please bare with me for a bit.

Handmade Nation - A New Clip

Today I got an exciting email from my friend Faythe Levine, there is a new clip of Handmade Nation out (AKA The Indie Craft Documentary). In case you are not familiar with Faythe and her team, they have been traveling the country filming different crafters about their beliefs in crafts and the DIY culture. I know I for one have been filmed at Stitch Austin and at the Brooklyn Renegade Craft Fair for the event. Faythe will be at Stitch again this Nov 10th showing a preview of Handmade Nation that is going to be amazing and we can’t wait!!!! In the meantime watch the preview, pass it on to friends and enjoy.

Garage Studio Conversion

Did I mention that I was taking the big leap and having my garage converted into an office/studio space? Well I am. I have been working out of the master bedroom of my house for almost 5 years and am finally going to actually move a bed in this room and my jewelry to the new office. If you remember the blog post about my messy studio you will know why I need a bigger space. I am super excited, but right now everything from my attic and garage is all over my house while the renovations take place.

This is my dining room currently. Needless to say we are not having a lot of meals in there at the moment.

The pretty much empty garage. Chris got some free office furniture that is too big to move into the house and I have two vintage couches out there I am trying to get rid of.

Yesterday the sheet rock came down and the air conditioning was run into the room. I am ordering lights, fan and flooring this weekend.

Rhumba Girl Lampshade

New week, new episodes of Craft Lab. Well not brand spanking new, those start on October 1st. Interestingly the picture of the adorable Rhumba Girl Lampshade here is something I am making on Wednesday's episode called Latin Inspired Crafts with the Crafty Chica Kathy Cano Murillo. Kathy is also the first new episode of the second season with All That Glitters. My husband Chris also makes an appearance in that episode as a crafter. Until then tune in all this week to DIY Network at 11am Central for crafty goodness. Don't forget Stylelicious on Tuesday and Thursday! If you love my mom on Craft Lab making the resin table and tissue box, then you are going to love her on Stylelicious making a purse out of a vinyl record!

Today I have to fight Labor Day traffic on the ride back to Austin from Dallas. Chris and I have been here visiting our fams from 18 month old nieces to 99 year old grandmothers.
